{"id":2771,"date":"2021-07-28T15:54:05","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T14:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/?p=2771"},"modified":"2021-11-20T20:42:25","modified_gmt":"2021-11-20T20:42:25","slug":"bbc-buries-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/?p=2771","title":{"rendered":"BBC buries article"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From time to time, I have gone through the tedious but necessary task of picking up the BBC\u2019 bias over Israel\u2019s dominance of the Palestinians.\u00a0 This article is riddled with systemic bias.<a href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a>\u00a0 There is one sentence that, to me, sums up the attitude of the pro-Israeli report.\u00a0 The issue is the 600,000 Israeli Jews who have settled in the West Bank.\u00a0 \u201cPalestinians say these are illegal under international law and are obstacles to peace, but Israel denies this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0It is not the Palestinians that say that the settlement process is illegal but the UK, UN the USA and EU and most others who have thought about it.\u00a0 It is an astonishing piece of false reporting.\u00a0 It is the reduction of international law to one of merely opinion.\u00a0 So I, and many others, complain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"493\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/bbcapologise.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/bbcapologise.jpg 698w, https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/bbcapologise-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But what do you do when it produces nothing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June the official UN observer to the Middle East, &nbsp;Michael Lynk said, \u201cin my report, I conclude that the&nbsp;Israeli settlements&nbsp;do amount to a war crime\u201d. \u201cI submit to you that this finding compels the international community \u2026 to make it clear to Israel that its&nbsp;illegal occupation, and its defiance of international law and international opinion, can and will no longer be cost-free,\u201d<a href=\"#_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what did the BBC say on this blunt correction of misreporting?&nbsp; Nothing.&nbsp; How can we complain against misreporting when there is nothing there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How does the BBC decide what is worth reporting and what is not?&nbsp; Now it may be that influence comes from the Chairman who is from the establishment<a href=\"#_edn3\">[iii]<\/a>, and the establishment CEO<a href=\"#_edn4\">[iv]<\/a>.&nbsp; It may be that the Government sees Israel as a strategic ally and does not wish its war crimes drawn attention to.<a href=\"#_edn5\">[v]<\/a>&nbsp; It may be the journalists are ardent Zionists or cowed by the boss\u2019s views.&nbsp; It may be that they fought to report it and lost.&nbsp; I just do not know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to see if there was a paper trail.&nbsp; &nbsp;How was Lynk\u2019s report went unreported by the BBC?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GENEVA (9 July 2021) \u2013 The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, Michael Lynk, today called on the international community to designate the creation of Israeli settlements as a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.\u201d <a href=\"#_edn6\">[vi]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My question \u201cWas it reported on the BBC?\u201d and \u201cI would like copies of any e-mails relating to how it should be reported\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what I got back<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPart VI of Schedule 1 to the Act provides that information held by the BBC and the other public service broadcasters is only covered by the Act if it is held for \u2018purposes other than those of journalism, art or literature\u2019.
