{"id":1391,"date":"2018-01-28T12:42:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-28T12:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/?p=1391"},"modified":"2018-01-28T12:53:25","modified_gmt":"2018-01-28T12:53:25","slug":"play-and-heal-project-public-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/?p=1391","title":{"rendered":"Play and heal project public meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 22nd February we will welcome Dr Mona Al Fara from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mecaforpeace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East Children&#8217;s Alliance<\/a> to Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Al Fara will talk about the desperate need to help children in Gaza traumatised by war, and siege and seeing their parents and wider families devastated by Israeli aggression.<\/p>\n<div ><strong>The grave situation in Gaza<\/strong><\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >The Gaza Strip is the most densely populated region in the world.  Over 80 per cent of its people are refugees and their descendants, expelled from Palestine in the 1948 war that established the state of Israel. The majority of the 1.8 million residents are under the age of 15.<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >Israel\u2019s attacks on Gaza in 2008\/9 killed 1,473 Palestinians. Israel\u2019s 2014 bombardment, lasting 51 days, reduced entire neighbourhoods to rubble and killed at least 2,100; of whom 539 were children.<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >According to UNICEF, 373,000 children  in Gaza  suffer from some degree of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div ><a href=\"https:\/\/visualizingpalestine.org\/visuals\/gaza-refugee-deaths\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1393\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/gaza-refugee-deaths-212x300.png\" alt=\"gaza refugee deaths\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/gaza-refugee-deaths-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/gaza-refugee-deaths-768x1086.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/gaza-refugee-deaths-724x1024.png 724w, https:\/\/www.sheffieldpsc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/gaza-refugee-deaths.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>Additionally, 11,000 were injured, one third with permanent disabilities and more than 18,000 Palestinian homes were destroyed. Israel\u2019s siege and the periodic bombardments of Gaza have prevented people rebuilding their lives. Many still live in tents and makeshift homes. Water and electricity are still only available for a few hours a day. For schools, hospitals, workshops, farms and homes to be restored Palestinians need international solidarity. <\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div ><strong>Khuza\u2019a is a town<\/strong> of 10,000 inhabitants in the south east of the<\/div>\n<div >Gaza Strip. It is situated only 500 metres from the border with  Israel. In the 2009 attack, it was reported the Israeli army bulldozed houses in Khuza\u2019a with their residents still inside, and civilians were shot when carrying white flags.<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >\n<p>These accounts were corroborated by the Israeli human rights organisation, B\u2019Tselem. Hundreds of its civilians were killed and large areas of the town were wiped out. Some residents were used as human shields by the invading Israeli army. As a result, thousands of children are still traumatised and in need of psychological help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >Khuza\u2019a is about six kilometres from the Never Stop Dreaming Project, which has been supported  Sheffield PSC for many years.<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >It will manage and support the new project, with the help of the charity, Middle Eastern Children\u2019s Alliance (MECA). Sheffield\u2019s Yemeni community raised \u00a39,600 towards the Centre\u2019s construction, and a resident of Khuza\u2019a has donated the<br \/>\nland for the building to be constructed on. The building work will be<br \/>\nfinished by the Spring of 2018. The existing staff from the Never Stop Dreaming Project, that is already involved with the local community, will be provided with additional training to support children with post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/div>\n<div ><\/div>\n<div >Thanks for reading this.
