An ex Student Education Officer at Sheffield University is under an incredible slur by the Daily Mail. In a democracy people are supposed to meet discuss clarify each other\u2019s positions perhaps reach an agreement perhaps not.\u00a0 Suppose an opponent wilfully misstates someone\u2019s position then attacks them for it.\u00a0 There are at least two possibilities.\u00a0 They do not wish for a coherent discussion that they may lose or they wish for a nasty cheap headline.\u00a0\u00a0 This is from the Daily Mail.\u00a0\u00a0\"blog\" <\/span><\/p>\n

The full sentence was<\/span><\/p>\n

‘If terrorism means protecting and defending my land, I am so proud to be called terrorist. What an honour for the Palestinians!’<\/span><\/p>\n

This statement is the same structure as this one.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf Donald trump loves Muslims then pigs can fly.\u201d\u00a0 Only a complete idiot or someone wishing to misrepresent would conclude that the speaker believes pigs can fly.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is one definition of terrorist <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201ca person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The UN states that every nation and person has the legal right to defend their land.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

So a Palestinian \u2018protecting and defending my land\u2019 is not of itself a terrorist.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

The United Nations resolution 2334 tells us that the West Bank settlements are a \u201cflagrant violation\u201d of international law and have \u201cno legal validity\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

So any Israeli soldier helping the illegal settlements in the West Bank is acting illegally. They clearly use violence.\u00a0 It is aimed at civilians. \u00a0It is clearly a political aim.\u00a0 It really does look like they satisfy this definition of terrorist.<\/span><\/p>\n

A debate on the issue of \u2018spot the terrorist\u2019 would be interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the one side we could have the young woman who believes \u201c<\/span>‘Together we are stronger, together we will win. Together our world will be brighter and more inclusive for all of us regardless of our differences and where we come from.\u00a0Regardless of our religions and backgrounds or ethnicity. We can still disagree and still love each other through disagreement.’\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other we could have an Israeli soldier using violence to help destroy a home in the West bank.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently The Daily mail on line has 200million visits a month.\u00a0 For an organisation of this size to attack a young Moslem student, and use her photograph is beyond disgusting.\u00a0 Reading this Daily Mail article reminded me of another.<\/span><\/p>\n
