Women for Palestine
The next meeting of the Sheffield Palestine Women's Scholarship Fund will be on Tuesday 8th July 2008, at 6 p.m.in the Blue Moon cafe (James St, just by the side of the cathedral). Any woman who wants to get involved or just find out more about our group is welcome to join us there. We will be planning our next fund raising activities for autumn 2008.
In addition to fund rasing we also hold occasional informal evenings such as film nights, to educate ourselves about the situation of the Palestinian people.
If you'd like to organise your own fund raiser to support us, please let us know. We now have our very own leaflet giving information about the Fund and how we can help to support women in Gaza to continue their education. You can download copies of the leaflet below, which also gives information about how to make a donation or to set up a Standing order to the fund. Please e mail Sheffield PSC if you'd rather we sent you a copy.
A big thank you to all who have sent us donations and to those who have set up Standing orders to the Scholarship fund.
2008 update
Three of our scholarship students are now in the second year of their studies and the fourth student is in her first year.
Our income from standing orders continues to grow slowly but steadily and we hope in September 2008 to be able to award several new scholarships, in addition to the four we awarded in 2006.
2007 events
In June and July 2007 two fund raisers were organised to raise money towards the costs of the scholarships in 2007 to 2008. Thanks to Gill for all her hard work in organising a circle dance, and to Hilary for leading the dancing. Thanks also to Val for organising an 'Eating for Palestine' meal at the Kashmir restaurant on Spital Hill, and to all the staff at the Kashmir for providing the delicious food and enabling all profits to go to the scholarship Fund.
Unfortunately we had to cancel the walk in Derbyshire due to illness.
A huge, huge thank you to Polly and Anna, two of our supporters who in 2007 raised over £900 for the fund by doing a sponsored run for us in Poland!! Polly was recovering from a fractured shoulder, and Anna was 20 weeks pregnant, but that failed to stop them and they managed to collect an amazing amount of money from all their sponsors.
Thanks to everyone who supported Polly and Anna and also to all the other people who have already made donations to our fund or set up Standing Orders.
We held a third successful women's social at the Broomhall Centre in November 2007, with food, cocktails, singing, dance and loads of fun. We were thrilled that women from Al Zaytouna, a dabke dance group based in Nottingham, were able to join us. they gave a fantastic performance and then led a workshop. The money raised will go towards the cost of the four scholarships which have been awarded to four young women in the Gaza Strip.
