How the scholarships work
How the scholarships work:
The fund is administered in Gaza by a panel drawn from the Board of Directors of the Red Crescent Society in the Gaza strip and the Union of Health Work Committees. Candidates for scholarships are put forward by their local community centre and are either ready to enter university or in the first or second year of a course but unable to continue for financial reasons. There are strict selection criteria, which include the candidate's socio-economic background, commitment to work for the community and circumstances such as recent house demolition or war injuries are taken into account.
Each candidate receives $600 a year. This covers more than 75% of the annual fees (the other 25% is covered by local organisaitons and the universities). In addition each candidate is given $100 towards books, stationary and transport costs.
We hope to provide regular reports on the development of this project and the progress of the young women whom we support. Our commitment in Sheffield will be to raise sufficient funds to cover the three year scholarships and hopefully to increase the number of women that we can support in this way. In order to do this we need Sheffield women to support our fund raising events - see Events page for details of forthcoming fund raisers.
