Day of action against Israeli trade
Event times:
Sat, 26/11/2011 - 11:00am - 12:30pm
Location:
Outside the Co-op store on Pinstone St, Sheffield city centre (opposite the Peace Gardens).
Directions:
The international campaign against agricultural trade with Israel has spread rapidly over the last year and there will be actions taking place in at least nine European countries, focussing on the companies which are complicit in the development of Israeli agriculture, all at the cost of Palestinian land and natural resources, and the destruction of Palestinian farming communities. The day of action has been called by the Palestinian led global movement for Boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel.
In Sheffield, as well as many other cities, we have decided to focus on the Co-operative store. many of us are co-operative members and we are demanding that as an ethical business the Co-op should be taking a principled stand and take the lead in suspending all trade with companies that are complicit in the colonisation of Palestinian land. We will be outside the Co-op store, informing Co-op shoppers about the need to persuade the Co-op to change its policy towards trade with Israel. We will have printed cards for shoppers and members to hand in to their local store.
Please join us for this important day of action and play your part in persuading the Co-op to take its place at the forefront of the campaign to isolate Israel until it complies with international law. We need supporters to hold banners and placards, and to talk to shoppers and hand out cards.
Report:
We had a successful protest at the Coop. We gave out cards to put the case that the Coop should stop selling Israeli goods. Their policy of not buying settlement goods is not strong enough for two reasons. Firstly the Israeli state simply puts made in Israel on settlement goods. Secondly Israel will continue its expansionist policies until it meets strong resistance. Business as usual merely encourages current Israeli policies.
