The Prevent Strategy and Islamophobia
February 19, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
There is growing evidence that the ‘Prevent Strategy’ has become a tool for intimidating and isolating Muslim communities. The actions of a tiny number of fanatics are being used to clamp down on expressing views on such matters as Syria or Palestine that disagree with government policies. For instance:
- A child who took pro Palestine leaflets to school was told by a policeman that he held terrorist like views. Al Jazeera 23/7/15
- Another child mentioned eco-terrorism in a debating society meeting. He was taken out of class and asked whether he was affiliated to Isis Guardian 23/9/15
There is a two-fold danger. On the one hand teachers, youth workers, imams, etc. are recruited to become thought police and, on the other, a part of the population feels under threat, fearful of expressing political views.
This meeting will examine the Prevent Strategy and what we can do to stop government policies feeding Islamophobia.
