Cinema Palestino: ‘Gaza’ and ‘The Reports on Sarah and Saleem’ @ Showroom

December 1 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

GAZA + Intro

1 December 2019, Showroom Cinema, 1pm

Introduced by Shahd Abusalama, Sheffield Hallam University

This rich documentary portrait of Gaza challenges the media imageof this tiny strip of land. ‘This unique and vibrant land, rich in culture and history, is home to a people who are oppressed and dehumanised but who are also resilient and strong and who want nothing more than to live normal lives. How do you tell the story of such a place?’ asks director Garry Keane.

Through the film we meet a diverse range of individuals who tell their story in their own words. With stunning cinematography by co-director Andrew McConnell the film documents both those weary with the siege as well as the resistance and resilience of many. Winner of the Critics Prize, Dublin Film Festival, and anHonorableMention, Sundance Film Festival

The extra-marital affair between a Palestinian man and an Israeli woman has political consequences under Israeli rule.

Saleem from East Jerusalemworks as a deliveryman. Sarah runs a café in West Jerusalem. Despite being worlds apart, they risk everything as they embark on an illicit affair, snatching moments in the night to meet. But Sarah is the wife of a high-ranking Israeli military official and a risky late-night tryst goes awry and threatens to expose them.

Caught up in the occupation machinery and socio-political pressure, Sarah and Saleem find themselves trapped in a web of deceitwhich not even the truth looks able to stop. This is MuayadAlayan’s second feature film. Winner of the Special Jury Award and Audience Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival 2018
